In short · updated 2026-08-28
The most credible step between spreadsheets and a full ERP for multichannel sellers, though the entry price and multi-year terms rule out small operations.

Pros

  • Stock levels sync across more than 25 sales channels, which removes the oversell problem that spreadsheets create the moment a second marketplace is added
  • Mobile barcode scanning covers receiving, putaway, picking, packing and cycle counts, so the warehouse module is not just a stock ledger with a scanner bolted on
  • Lot and serial tracking plus stock transfers across multiple locations are included rather than sold as an upgrade
  • Landed cost and COGS calculations flow into margin reporting, so profitability per SKU reflects freight and duty rather than invoice price alone
  • Reviewers consistently rate onboarding and support as the strongest part of the product, with configuration walked through step by step

Cons

  • The entry plan starts well above what a seller doing a few hundred orders a month will accept, and there is no small-seller tier beneath it
  • Contracts run in twelve, twenty-four or thirty-six month terms with no month-to-month option, so a bad fit is expensive to leave
  • Documentation lags the product and uses inconsistent terminology, which lengthens self-service setup and pushes routine questions to support

What Finale Inventory actually does

Finale Inventory, now sold under the Descartes name after its acquisition, is cloud inventory management for ecommerce brands that sell in more than one place. Its core job is a single stock number that stays true across Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Walmart, TikTok Shop and the rest of a channel list running past twenty-five destinations. When a unit leaves through one channel, availability drops everywhere else, which is the failure mode that ends most spreadsheet systems: the oversell, the cancelled order, the marketplace metric that suffers for it.

The second half is the warehouse. Finale ships a mobile barcode workflow covering receiving, putaway, picking, packing and cycle counts, across multiple locations, with lot and serial tracking, stock transfers and audits. Purchasing sits alongside it, purchase orders, reorder points, automated replenishment, and the financial layer tracks landed cost and cost of goods sold so margin reporting reflects freight and duty rather than supplier invoice alone. Accounting pushes to QuickBooks Online or Xero, and shipping is handed to ShipStation or ShippingEasy rather than duplicated. Plans are published for the two lower tiers and quoted above that, on terms of one to three years.

Key features

The working parts, in the order most teams meet them:

  • Real-time stock sync across marketplaces, shopping carts and points of sale
  • Mobile barcode operations for receiving, picking, packing and cycle counting
  • Multi-location inventory with transfers, lot and serial numbers and stock audits
  • Purchase orders, reorder points and automated replenishment with supplier records
  • Landed cost, COGS and valuation feeding margin and profitability reports
  • Accounting sync to QuickBooks Online and Xero, shipping handoff to ShipStation

Who it's for

The fit is a seller with real physical complexity and no appetite for an ERP implementation: one to three warehouses, thousands of SKUs, several sales channels, and a picking process that has started producing errors. Distributors and light manufacturers with lot-tracked goods are well served, as are brands whose accountants need landed cost handled properly rather than estimated at year end. Reviewers describe the interface as unusually approachable for this category, which matters when warehouse staff rather than analysts are the daily users.

It is a poor fit below a certain scale. The entry plan costs more per month than most small sellers spend on their entire software stack, and there is no lighter tier, no published free trial and no month-to-month billing. A brand selling on one channel from one room does not need this, and a very large operation with heavy manufacturing or complex financial consolidation will find a true ERP a better destination than a stopping point.

How it compares

Cin7 covers similar ground with more built-in ecommerce breadth and a reputation for a harder onboarding; teams that survive the implementation get more, teams that do not get less. Katana is the lighter, cheaper alternative aimed at makers, strong on manufacturing orders and much weaker on multi-warehouse barcode operations. NetSuite is the eventual endpoint for companies that also need full financials, at several times the cost and implementation effort. Finale's position between them is deliberate: warehouse depth close to the heavier systems, setup time closer to the lighter ones, and support that reviewers rate above both.

Verdict

Finale earns its ratings on the two things that matter in inventory software, accurate multichannel stock and a barcode workflow the floor will actually follow, and its support reputation is unusually strong for a product in this bracket. The caveat is commercial: the entry price assumes an established operation, the contract runs in years rather than months, and the documentation is dated enough that early questions go to a human. Sellers below that scale should stay on something lighter until the oversells start costing more than the subscription.
