In short · updated 2026-08-28
The best option for a store selling internationally, because local routing cuts both delivery time and shipping cost, though the catalog is narrower and the seller does not choose the print partner.

Pros

  • Orders route automatically to the production facility nearest the buyer across 32 countries, which shortens delivery and avoids cross-border shipping and customs
  • Native connectors cover most storefronts and marketplaces, including Wix, Squarespace, TikTok Shop and Amazon that many competitors skip
  • A free plan gives full access to the catalog, the mockup generator and the production network with no monthly commitment
  • The design editor includes a Shutterstock library of over 360 million assets, so listings can be produced without external stock subscriptions
  • A documented REST API with order webhooks covers custom storefronts and platforms without a native app

Cons

  • Sellers cannot choose or lock a specific print partner, so the same product made in two countries can differ slightly in colour and finish
  • The catalog is smaller than the largest networks and weak on embroidery and specialist decoration, which limits apparel brands wanting more than printing
  • Product and shipping discounts are the main reason to pay for a subscription, and the trial excludes those discounts, so the value of the paid tier cannot be tested before buying

What Gelato actually does

Gelato is a print-on-demand platform built around a distributed production network rather than a handful of large factories. When an order arrives, the system routes it to a partner facility close to the delivery address, the network spans 32 countries, so a poster ordered in Germany is printed in Germany rather than shipped from another continent. For a store selling internationally that changes two numbers at once: transit time falls, and so does the shipping cost, along with the customs friction that turns a cheap product into an expensive delivery.

The seller-facing side is conventional and complete. A browser design editor produces artwork and mockups, with a Shutterstock library of more than 360 million assets built in so listings can be created without a separate stock subscription. Native apps connect Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce, TikTok Shop and Amazon, importing orders and returning tracking automatically, and a documented REST API with webhooks covers anything without a connector. The catalog runs to apparel, wall art, mugs, phone cases, calendars and photo books. The platform is free to use, with paid subscription tiers that mainly buy discounts on product and shipping cost rather than additional capability.

Who it's for

The seller who gains most is one with customers in several countries. A store whose buyers are split between North America and Europe pays a real penalty with a single-region supplier, in both shipping cost and delivery time, and Gelato removes it without any operational work. Wall art, posters and framed prints are the strongest categories, since those are bulky, expensive to ship and cheap to produce locally. Creators and small brands also benefit from a free tier that carries the full catalog, which makes the platform viable before there is any volume to justify a subscription.

It is not the right supplier for a brand whose identity is the garment. There is no cut-and-sew option, embroidery and specialist decoration are limited, and the catalog is smaller than the largest networks, so a seller who wants a specific blank or an unusual finish will run out of options. Sellers who require absolute consistency between units should also think carefully: because production is distributed and the partner is not chosen by the seller, two copies of the same product made in different countries can vary in colour and finish. High-volume operations that depend on a single quality-controlled line will find that unacceptable.

How it compares

Printful runs its own facilities and controls quality more tightly, with a larger catalog and embroidery that Gelato lacks, but its network is thinner outside North America and Europe and its base costs are higher. Printify brokers a marketplace of independent print providers, which brings the lowest prices in the category and the widest quality variance, and it does at least let sellers choose their provider, the control Gelato withholds. Tapstitch and similar apparel specialists beat both on garment customisation and lose badly on geographic reach. Against this field Gelato's case is narrow and strong: nobody else fulfils locally in as many countries.

Verdict

Gelato is the clearest choice in print on demand when the customer base is international, and the free tier means the decision can be made on real orders rather than on a brochure. Print quality reports well across the main categories, the integration list is the broadest in the category, and the routing genuinely delivers the savings it promises. Two caveats hold the rating below the top of the scale: quality can drift between production countries because the seller does not pick the partner, and the paid tiers exist mostly to sell discounts, with the trial excluding those discounts, so the subscription has to be bought on faith rather than tested.
