The default payroll pick for US-based SMB clients, but it's a US-only platform with no real fit for operations outside the US.

What it is and who it's for

This is a full-service payroll, benefits and HR platform built for US small and mid-sized businesses, and it has become one of the most common recommendations accountants make to those clients. The pitch for a practice is the Gusto Pro dashboard: a single console to manage every client's payroll, financial data and people analytics, paired with a partner program offering revenue share and CPE credits. If your book of business is US-based and you want to standardize clients on one stack rather than juggling several payroll logins, this is a natural fit.

Strengths and where it falls short

Every plan includes unlimited payroll runs and automatic federal, state and local tax filing, removing the manual filing burden that trips up smaller tools, while benefits and basic HR are built in so clients rarely need a separate system. The 2026 releases added useful partner features: per-client opportunity flags in Gusto Pro, a Karbon integration that auto-creates payroll work items, and chat-based payroll via ChatGPT, Claude and Slack. The flip side: Simple is single-state only, so multi-state clients are pushed to Plus, per-employee fees compound at scale, and international coverage is uneven, with FX fees on contractor payments and roughly $699/employee/mo for the Gusto Global EOR after the March 2026 increase.

Pricing and value

Pricing is transparent and month-to-month with no setup fee: Simple at $49 plus $6 per person, Plus at $80 plus $12, and Premium at $180 plus $22. A practice can also get a free Plus plan for its own firm as long as it onboards at least one client every 12 months, which makes the partner economics attractive. For a 10-person client, expect roughly $109/mo on Simple or about $200/mo on Plus, so the base-plus-per-head model is fair for small teams but less competitive once you're managing larger or multi-state payrolls.

Regional note and verdict

This is a US-centric product: the site and partner dashboard are reachable from anywhere, but US tax filing and US benefits are meaningless for an employer entity outside the US, and there is no localized non-US payroll, so it belongs in the conversation for non-US clients only when they have US payroll obligations. For a US-focused practice, though, it is close to a default choice thanks to strong tax automation, real partner tooling and honest pricing. It loses points for the single-state Simple tier, per-head costs that scale poorly, and pricey international options, none of which are dealbreakers domestically.
