A strong cross-border money-movement platform for clients with real international volume, but it is not a bank and onboarding depends on your country of incorporation.

Pros

  • Genuinely low FX markup (0.5% on majors) and local-rail payouts in 90+ currencies beat traditional SWIFT banking on cost and speed
  • Native two-way sync with Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite makes multi-currency reconciliation far less painful
  • Free Explore tier and per-entity (not per-account) pricing keep costs predictable for smaller client books

Cons

  • It is an EMI, not a bank: no deposit insurance, and onboarding/KYC depends on your country of business registration (some markets are not eligible)
  • Transaction fees stack on top of the monthly plan: card acquiring, SWIFT ($20-35), and a less-publicised 0.3% incoming fee on third-party transfers can erode the headline FX savings

Key features

  • Global Accounts in 20+ currencies with local bank details, holding 60+ currencies on one balance
  • Multi-currency corporate cards with spend controls, approval workflows and expense management
  • FX conversion at 0.5% above interbank for major currencies, with local-network payouts across 200+ countries

What it is and who it's for

Airwallex is a global financial platform built around multi-currency business accounts, cross-border payments and corporate cards; not a high-street bank. For accountants, the relevance is narrow but real: it shines when a client genuinely moves money across borders, such as import/export businesses, e-commerce sellers collecting in foreign currencies, agencies paying overseas contractors, or groups with multiple entities. For a domestic-only client in one currency, it adds complexity without much payoff.

Strengths and the limitations to name

The core value is FX and payout economics: conversion at 0.5% above interbank on majors, with local-rail payouts in 200+ countries that mostly arrive same-day instead of crawling through SWIFT, plus native two-way sync with Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite that reconciles multi-currency activity automatically. The caveats matter, though. This is an Electronic Money Institution, not a bank (funds are safeguarded but not deposit-insured) onboarding is gated by country of incorporation, and weak support is the most common complaint once something goes wrong.

Pricing and real cost

Plans are charged per legal entity, excluding VAT: Explore is free if a client deposits or holds around £10k (otherwise ~£19/mo), Grow is ~£49/mo for spend controls and approvals, and Accelerate starts near £999/mo for enterprise needs. The subscription is only the floor. FX markup, card acquiring (roughly 1.3% + £0.20 domestic, 3%+ international), SWIFT fees of $20-35, and a quietly-applied 0.3% fee on incoming third-party transfers all stack on top. Model the all-in cost on actual transaction volume before recommending it.

Regional note and verdict

Availability depends on country of incorporation: Airwallex onboards businesses registered in supported jurisdictions (UK, US, APAC and select other markets), while firms registered elsewhere may need to use it through a supported entity, so confirm eligibility for your incorporation first. For the right cross-border profile transacting at volume, it's a genuinely cost-effective alternative to bank FX; below that threshold, the operational overhead isn't worth it.
