Employment Hero review
HR records, payroll, rostering and hiring in one platform for small and mid-sized employers.
The most complete HR and payroll suite for Australian and New Zealand employers, though implementations run long and the modular pricing quietly doubles the headline per-employee figure.
Pros
- Employee records, contracts, payroll, rostering and onboarding sit on one dataset, so a pay change does not need re-keying in three systems
- Award interpretation and leave accrual handling are built for Australian and New Zealand employment rules rather than retrofitted
- The hiring module posts to Seek, Indeed and LinkedIn and screens applicants without a separate ATS subscription
- HeroForce covers employment in countries where the business has no entity, so global hires do not require a second vendor
- The recruitment module has a genuinely free tier, which lets a small employer test hiring before committing to HR plans
Cons
- Reviewers report the Xero connection breaking during setup, and several describe implementations still incomplete after a year
- Rostering, managed payroll, HR advisory, learning and chat are each priced as separate add-ons on top of the per-employee HR plan, most carrying their own monthly minimum
- Switching between modules and loading reports is noticeably slow, and reporting templates are less flexible than the dashboards suggest

What Employment Hero actually does
Employment Hero is an HR and payroll platform for small and mid-sized employers, built first for Australia and New Zealand and since extended to the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia. The company markets it as an employment operating system, which in practice means one employee record that everything else hangs off: contracts and onboarding, policy acknowledgements, leave, timesheets, rosters, pay runs, performance reviews and offboarding. The appeal for a business currently running a spreadsheet roster, a separate payroll product and a folder of signed PDFs is that the same person exists once.
Around that core sit four things that matter commercially. Payroll handles award interpretation and leave accruals under local employment rules rather than as a configuration exercise. Rostering and time and attendance feed approved timesheets straight into the pay run. A hiring module posts to the major job boards and screens applicants, including through AI video interviews. And HeroForce is a managed employment service for hiring staff in countries where the business has no legal entity, which brings global hires inside the same platform rather than a second vendor relationship.

Key features
The modules are sold separately but share one employee record.
- Employee records, contracts, onboarding flows and policy acknowledgement with compliance reminders
- Payroll with award interpretation, leave accruals and statutory reporting to the tax authority
- Rostering and time and attendance, with timesheet approval feeding the pay run directly
- Hiring with job board posting to Seek, Indeed and LinkedIn plus AI-assisted candidate screening
- HeroForce managed employment for staff in countries where the employer has no entity
- Benefits layer including earned wage access, insurance and an employee assistance programme
Who it's for
The sweet spot is an employer of roughly twenty to five hundred staff in Australia or New Zealand, particularly in hospitality, retail, healthcare, construction and childcare, where shift rosters and award compliance make payroll genuinely difficult. For those businesses the combination of rostering and award-aware payroll under one login removes the most error-prone handoff in the whole operation, and the HR advisory add-on substitutes for employment law advice a small company would otherwise buy by the hour.
It is a weaker fit for United States employers, where the payroll depth does not match domestic specialists, and for companies under about ten staff, where the per-employee minimums on each add-on make the effective cost per head high. Anyone with a heavily customised existing payroll setup should also treat the migration as a project with a real timeline rather than a switch, since the most common complaint in public reviews is a setup that dragged on for months.
How it compares
Rippling covers more ground globally and is stronger on device and app provisioning, but it is priced for larger budgets and does not handle Australian award interpretation with the same fluency. BambooHR is cleaner as an HR system of record and easier to adopt, though payroll and rostering have to come from elsewhere, which reverses the consolidation argument. ELMO competes directly in the Australian mid-market with deeper learning and performance modules, while trailing on payroll and on the free entry point for hiring. Assembling Xero payroll with Deputy remains the cheapest credible alternative and works well, at the cost of two vendors and a sync to maintain.

Verdict
For an Australian or New Zealand employer with shift workers, Employment Hero solves a real and expensive problem, and the breadth on offer at this end of the market is unusual. The caveats are consistent enough across public reviews to plan around: budget for a longer implementation than sales suggests, verify the accounting connection before go-live rather than after, and price the add-ons you actually need before comparing the headline figure with anything else. Bought with those eyes open it is a solid consolidation play; bought on the entry price alone it will feel like a bait and switch.
