A serious retention platform that joins app analytics to push, in-app and messaging campaigns, though the dashboard demands real training and costs climb steeply with monthly active users.

Pros

  • Segmentation runs on live behavioural events, so a cohort defined this morning can be messaged this afternoon
  • Push, in-app, web, email, SMS, WhatsApp and RCS are orchestrated in one journey rather than in separate tools
  • Funnels, cohorts and retention reports sit next to the campaign builder, so analysis and action are the same screen
  • Send-time and channel decisions can be handed to the model rather than set by rule
  • Entry tier is genuinely self-serve with a month-long trial before any commitment

Cons

  • Reviewers consistently describe a steep learning curve and a dashboard that feels slow and unintuitive at first
  • Report customisation is limited, so bespoke analysis often ends up exported elsewhere
  • Pricing is metered on monthly active users, and the jump from the self-serve tier to a quoted plan is large

What CleverTap actually does

CleverTap is a customer engagement and retention platform for companies whose product is an app. It ingests behavioural events from mobile and web, builds a profile per user, and lets a marketer define segments from what people actually did rather than from a static list: everyone who abandoned checkout twice this week, everyone who has not opened the app in twenty-one days, everyone who watched three episodes and never subscribed. Those segments then drive campaigns across push notifications, in-app messages, web messages, email, SMS, WhatsApp and RCS, sequenced into journeys with waits and branches.

The second half of the product is analytics, and it is closer to product analytics than to campaign reporting. Funnels, cohorts, retention curves and uninstall tracking sit in the same workspace as the campaign builder, which is the design decision that defines the tool: the question and the response live together, so a team can spot a drop-off on day three and ship a message to that cohort without moving to another system. An intelligence layer the vendor markets as CleverAI decides send time, channel and variant per user and learns from results. Delivery is a browser platform with SDKs for mobile and web, sold by monthly active users.

Key features

The capability set is wide, which is both the appeal and the reason onboarding takes weeks.

  • Event ingestion with per-user profiles and live behavioural segmentation
  • Journey orchestration across push, in-app, web, email, SMS, WhatsApp and RCS
  • Funnel, cohort, retention and uninstall analysis on app behaviour
  • A/B and multivariate testing with automated winner selection
  • Model-driven send-time, channel and content optimisation
  • Loyalty and promotions management for rewards, offers and campaign incentives

Who it's for

The fit is a consumer app with meaningful volume: retail and marketplace apps, streaming and subscription services, financial services, gaming. These teams have a retention problem that email alone cannot solve, enough traffic for cohort analysis to be statistically real, and usually a dedicated growth or CRM function to run the platform. Companies in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America will find regional channel support, particularly WhatsApp and RCS, better represented here than in some Western competitors.

It is a poor purchase for a small team without someone who owns it. Reviewers who complain about the platform are usually describing an implementation nobody had time to learn, and the entry tier's user allowance is modest enough that any real consumer app exceeds it quickly, at which point pricing becomes a negotiation. Business-to-business companies whose engagement happens over email and sales calls should buy a marketing automation tool instead.

How it compares

Braze is the closest peer and generally the stronger product for large enterprises, with a more polished interface and a higher price to match. MoEngage competes directly for the same mid-market app teams, often winning on price and losing on analytics depth. Customer.io is more flexible and far cheaper for teams whose messaging is mostly email and whose data pipeline is already tidy, but it is not an app analytics tool. Firebase covers push and basic analytics for nothing, which is where many teams start and where they stop being able to answer retention questions. CleverTap sits in the middle: more analytical than the messaging tools, more affordable than the enterprise platforms.

Verdict

CleverTap deserves its standing among app teams that take retention seriously. The combination of behavioural analytics and multi-channel orchestration in one workspace genuinely shortens the loop between noticing a problem and acting on it, and the channel coverage suits markets where messaging apps matter more than email. The caveat is the cost of getting there. The interface rewards training rather than intuition, reporting is less flexible than the analytics tools it partly replaces, and the pricing meter means growth in users is also growth in the bill. Budget for onboarding time and an owner, or the platform will be an expensive push notification sender.
