MyCase review
Practice management for small law firms, built around the client portal and getting invoices paid.
The fastest small-firm case manager to go live and the better one for billing, though document drafting and the integration list trail Clio badly.
Pros
- Onboarding is measured in days rather than weeks, and reviewers rate ease of use as the product's strongest attribute across every review site
- The client portal carries documents, messaging, invoices and scheduling in one place, with unlimited texting and appointment reminders included
- Billing is the standout module: time capture, invoice automation, trust accounting and card payments through the sibling LawPay product
- The 8am IQ AI tools handle the unglamorous work, OCR on scanned filings, document summaries, case timelines and fact extraction
- Intake forms feed a prospective-client pipeline, so leads and matters live in the same system rather than in a separate CRM
Cons
- Document management is the most frequent complaint in user reviews: the built-in drafting tools and template system are thin next to dedicated document assembly
- The integration catalogue runs to roughly sixty apps against Clio's several hundred, and it is heavily weighted toward legal point solutions rather than general business software
- Court rules coverage is narrow compared with Clio's jurisdiction-wide docketing, which matters for litigation practices that calendar by rule

What MyCase actually does
MyCase is cloud practice management for law firms, now sold under the 8am brand that also covers the LawPay payments product. The shape is familiar: matters hold documents, notes, contacts, tasks and deadlines; a shared calendar carries the firm's dates; time entries attach to work as it happens and roll into invoices at the end of the month. What distinguishes it is where the emphasis falls. MyCase was built around getting paid and around the client relationship, and both show.
The client portal is the centre of gravity. Clients sign in to read documents, exchange messages, view invoices and book appointments, with unlimited texting and automated reminders included rather than metered. Billing runs from time capture through invoice automation and trust accounting to card and bank payments processed by LawPay, which removes the reconciliation gap that appears when payments arrive outside the practice system. Intake sits at the front: web forms feed a prospective-client pipeline so leads are tracked before they become matters. The AI layer, 8am IQ, does OCR on scanned material, summarises documents, builds case timelines and extracts facts. A ten-day trial runs without a card, and the three published per-user tiers differ mainly in automation, reporting and AI allowance.

Key features
The modules a small firm uses weekly:
- Matter management with a shared firm calendar and deadline tracking
- Client portal covering documents, messaging, invoices and appointment booking
- Time tracking, invoice automation and trust accounting with integrated card payments
- Document generation from templates populated with case and client data
- Web intake forms feeding a prospective-client pipeline
- 8am IQ for OCR, document summarisation, case timelines and fact extraction
Who it's for
MyCase suits solo practitioners and firms of up to roughly twenty people that bill by the hour and want the billing cycle shortened. Family law, immigration, estate planning, criminal defence and bankruptcy practices dominate the customer base, and the common thread is a high volume of client communication rather than a high volume of complex documents. Firms replacing a paper diary and a shoebox of receipts get value in the first month, which is the strongest argument for it: the product is legible without training.
It disappoints firms whose work is document-heavy. The drafting tools and templates are the weakest part of the platform by a wide margin, and practices that assemble long structured documents will end up drafting elsewhere and filing back into MyCase. Litigation teams that calendar by court rule will find the rules coverage narrower than they need. And any firm embedded in specific third-party software should check the integration list first, because sixty apps is not many.
How it compares
Clio is the benchmark and wins on breadth: a far larger integration catalogue, deeper court-rules docketing and a stronger document layer, at the cost of a tiered pricing structure that reviewers accuse of moving previously included features upmarket. MyCase counters on speed to value, ease of use and billing, and typically costs less at the tier most small firms buy. Filevine is a different proposition, far more configurable, far more expensive, quote-only, and aimed at contingency practices with high matter volume. PracticePanther sits closest to MyCase on price and simplicity, with a smaller support organisation behind it.

Verdict
MyCase is the sensible default for a small hourly-billing firm that wants a practice system running this week rather than next quarter, and its portal and billing are genuinely better than the category average. The caveat is that document work is where it is thinnest, and that thinness is structural rather than cosmetic, a firm whose value sits in drafting should price Clio or a dedicated assembly tool before committing.
