TaxCycle review
Canadian professional tax software for T1, T2 and T3 returns, with slips, Quebec forms and a client portal.
The most workable Canadian pro tax package for a small or mid-size practice, though it is Windows-only and the complete suite is an awkward jump for a firm that mostly files personal returns.
Pros
- Data entry happens on replicas of the actual CRA and Revenu Québec forms, so a preparer reviews what the client will eventually see
- Batch carry-forward converts client files straight from ProFile, Taxprep, Cantax or DT Max, which makes switching a weekend job rather than a season
- AutoFill my Return pulls CRA slips and SlipSync matches them across a family group, removing most manual slip entry
- One suite covers T1, T2 and T3 alongside T4, T5 and T5013 slips and the Quebec TP1 and CO-17 forms
- Prices are published openly, which is rare in Canadian professional tax software, and support is Canadian phone support six days a week in season
Cons
- Windows desktop only, there is no Mac build and no browser edition, so Mac firms need a virtual machine and remote staff need a hosted desktop
- Licensing is per user on a calendar-year basis, and the jump from the personal-tax module to the complete suite is steep for a practice that files mostly T1s
- Canadian returns only, so a firm with US or cross-border filings still has to buy and learn a second package

What TaxCycle actually does
TaxCycle is professional tax preparation software for Canadian accountants, bookkeepers and tax preparers, now owned by Xero. It covers personal returns, corporate returns and trust returns, together with the slips a practice files on behalf of clients, T4, T4A, T5, T5013, and the Quebec forms that trip up packages designed only for the federal system. Returns are transmitted to the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec directly, and amendments go back through ReFILE.
The design philosophy is form-first. Preparers enter data on screen replicas of the real forms rather than through an abstracted interview, which suits professionals who know the schedules and want to see the return taking shape. Around that sit the workflow pieces: Client Manager for batch operations across the client base, AutoFill my Return for pulling CRA slip data, SlipSync for matching slips across a family group, DoxCycle for assembling source documents into bookmarked PDF binders, and TaxFolder as a portal where clients review and sign. Licences are calendar-year, sold per user and per module, rather than a rolling subscription.

Key features
The modules can be bought individually, which matters for a practice with a narrow filing mix.
- T1, T2 and T3 returns with federal and Quebec forms, including TP1 and CO-17
- Slip preparation covering T4, T4A, T5 and T5013
- Client Manager with batch carry-forward and conversion from ProFile, Taxprep, Cantax and DT Max
- AutoFill my Return and SlipSync to reduce manual entry across a household's returns
- DoxCycle for source-document binders linked to the file being prepared
- TaxFolder for client review, approval and electronic signature with an audit trail
Who it's for
The natural buyer is a Canadian practice of one to twenty preparers that handles a mix of personal returns and small corporate work, and wants the corporate module to be competent rather than an afterthought. Firms switching from another package benefit most from the conversion tooling, the ability to batch carry forward an entire client list from a competitor removes the usual reason practices stay put. Bookkeeping practices that already run Xero get an ecosystem fit as well.
Two groups should look elsewhere. Anyone on macOS faces a virtualisation project before they start, since the product is a Windows desktop application with no cloud edition; the same constraint complicates a fully remote team without hosted desktops. And a practice preparing a low volume of returns each year should price the individual modules carefully rather than assuming the suite, because the licence is an annual fixed cost regardless of how many files pass through it.
How it compares
Wolters Kluwer Taxprep is the incumbent in larger Canadian firms and goes deeper on complex corporate and multi-entity work, at a price and with a learning curve that suit a bigger practice. Intuit ProFile is the familiar mid-market alternative with a broad installed base, though its interface and workflow feel a generation older and its document handling is thinner. DT Max retains a following for trust and estate work in particular, where its calculation engine has a long reputation, but it does less to modernise the client-facing side. TaxCycle's argument against all three is speed of data entry, published pricing and the conversion path away from them.
Verdict
For a small or mid-size Canadian practice this is a well-judged package: fast form-driven entry, a corporate module that holds up, and the surrounding workflow of source documents, portal and signatures actually built rather than promised. The compromises are platform and packaging. Windows-only rules out part of the market outright, and the pricing structure rewards firms that file across all three return types while penalising the personal-tax-only shop that still wants the same quality of tooling. Practices that fit the profile will not find a better-balanced option in Canada.
