The most complete stack for 1099 season and vendor identity checks outside of an enterprise ERP module, though it arrives as four separately branded products with four separate logins and price lists.

Pros

  • eFileMyForms covers over 25 federal and state forms, including the 1099 series, W-2, W-2G, 1098, 1042-S and the 1095 ACA forms
  • Real-time and bulk TIN matching against IRS records is built into the filing flow rather than sold as a separate step
  • TINCheck screens a payee against IRS name and TIN records, the Death Master File, OFAC and other sanctions lists and USPS address validation in a single lookup
  • A multi-client dashboard makes the per-entity filing work practical for firms handling many small businesses
  • Print, mail and secure eDelivery of recipient copies are handled by the vendor, which removes the January envelope problem

Cons

  • The consumer-facing line is four separate brands, eFileMyForms, TINCheck, 1099 Pro and ReportMyUP, with separate accounts and pricing rather than one product
  • Print-and-mail orders placed after the late-January cut-off carry a per-form surcharge, which penalises exactly the firms most likely to be late
  • Pricing for the enterprise Compliance Cloud is quote-only, so the step up from the self-service brands is not something a small firm can budget for in advance

What Sovos actually does

Sovos is a tax compliance company whose enterprise platform, the Compliance Cloud, handles indirect tax, e-invoicing and information reporting for large multinationals, it claims coverage across roughly 200 countries and use by more than a hundred thousand companies, including half the Fortune 500. That is not the part most accountants meet. The part they meet is the self-service end of the same business: a set of smaller, separately branded products aimed at firms that have to get 1099s out of the door in January.

Those products are eFileMyForms, an IRS-approved filing service covering more than twenty-five federal and state forms; TINCheck, which verifies a payee's name and tax identification number against IRS records and screens the same party against sanctions and watchlists; 1099 Pro, a heavier cloud platform for organisations filing at volume across many states; and ReportMyUP, which handles the unclaimed property reporting most firms discover only when a client gets a state notice. They share plumbing and a compliance team, but they are bought, priced and logged into separately.

Key features

The common thread is getting a correct return to the right authority and a correct copy to the recipient, on time.

  • E-filing of the 1099 series, W-2 and W-2G, 1098, 1042-S and the ACA 1095 forms, with validation before transmission
  • 1099-NEC direct state reporting, priced per state return rather than bundled into a plan
  • Real-time and bulk TIN matching that catches name and number mismatches before they become IRS B-notices
  • Watchlist screening covering OFAC, UN and EU sanctions, US state lists, the IRS Exempt Organizations file, the Death Master File and USPS address validation
  • Print, mail and secure eDelivery of recipient copies, handled by the vendor rather than the firm's own printer
  • Bulk import from Excel and CSV with an auto-mapping template, and a dashboard that keeps client entities separate

Who it's for

This suits a bookkeeping practice or a small CPA firm that files for many entities and wants the recipient copies mailed by someone else. The per-form model means an off-season month costs nothing, which fits work that is genuinely seasonal, and the multi-client view keeps entities from bleeding into each other. Finance teams inside a mid-sized company that pays a lot of contractors are the other natural fit, particularly where vendor onboarding needs a documented identity check.

It is a poor fit for a firm that wants one login for everything. There is no single Sovos app that covers filing, identity checks and unclaimed property; you assemble it from brands. Anyone filing a handful of forms a year will also find the cheaper single-purpose filers less trouble, and anyone with an ERP that already has a reporting module should compare before adding another system.

How it compares

Track1099 by Avalara is the closest self-service rival and has a cleaner interface, with strong bookkeeping-tool sync but a narrower form list and no equivalent watchlist screening. Tax1099 competes hard on price and integrations for very small filers, and its support thins out at volume. For larger reporting operations, the real alternative is the reporting module inside an ERP such as Oracle or SAP, which avoids a second system but rarely keeps pace with state-level rule changes the way a dedicated compliance vendor does. Sovos wins on regulatory breadth and loses on coherence.

Verdict

The compliance work underneath is serious, and the combination of filing, TIN matching and sanctions screening in one vendor's hands is genuinely useful for a firm that onboards vendors as well as filing for them. The rating is held down not by the software's accuracy but by its shape: four brands, four purchase paths, a late-season surcharge that lands on the firms least able to avoid it, and an enterprise tier you cannot price without a sales call. Buy the specific brand that solves your January, not the suite.
